It is becoming a ritual for me to watch "Do Not Disturb" on Monday nights, even if it means juggling between 2 TVs. My mum's watching the drama on Ch U, and my dad is watching news on Ch 8. Unbelievable right - I bought an extra TV to avoid my parents fighting over it for their programmes. And look at the situation now!
This week's episode was absolutely fabulous. There was Mark Lee, Singapore's No. 1 Ah Beng (hooligan in Hokkien), and a local actress Charmaine Ang. Charmaine was playing the character of a massage gal/hooker (Shirley) working in the red light district. Business must be bad, because she was actually knocking on every door at the budget hotel, offering *ahem* massage services. *And you thought only banks do unsolicited calls!*
Anyway, the hooker must be really hard up for business, as she insisted on barging into the room occupied by the character played by Mark Lee (Ah Guan). Apparently, this bugger has been staying for months at the budget hotel. Shirley offered to her massage services, but the man insisted on a "no sex" policy the entire night. Well, they ended up chatting, eating instant noodles and making prank calls. When it had gotten late, Shirley refused to take the money that Ah Guan offered to her for her time. In interesting twist, she took off her blouse and offered her body - "It's my off day, no charge!" *That really blew me away, as it shows how the producer was able to convey so much meaning in a line, using Singlish!*
The show ended with a sombre note when he chased the crying Shirley out of the room. Apparently, Ah Guan was HIV+, and was hiding away from his family. Because of his foolishness, he had infected his family with the deadly disease, and was treating the budget hotel as a hospice - a place to stay while he waited to die.
The lady was right - "You don't go out, don't meet people, don't want massage, don't want sex. What you want? Are you just waiting to die in the room?"
