"Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see."
Yours truly watched the "X-Files: I Want To Believe" over the weekend, and came home a very happy man. It's good to relive my teenage years that was spent chasing alien conspiracy, appreciating crime thriller cinematography, and knowing the names of the kooky characters in the series (Lone Gunmen, Cigarette Man, Cancer Man, Jeremiah Smith). It's also special cos my non X-File fanatic sweetheart agreed to watch the show with me, and endured the several gruesome scenes. Very brave huh!

A sticking point in the movie was Scully's struggle with God, which is manifested in many people. We are constantly bombarded with false-truths that Christianity is a fake and useless belief, and face numerous science theories that seemed to have proven the non-existence of God. I see it as a paradox, considering that just as God is working on everybody with His grace, Satan and friends are working to plant seeds of doubt in your mind in the form of greed and hatred. And since Man are naturally creatures of comfort, we often choose the easy (and often not Christ-centered) way out for our puny lives.

It's also special cos my non X-File fanatic sweetheart agreed to watch the show with me, and endured the several gruesome scenes. Very brave huh! It's very cool to see the impeccable pair David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprising their roles of Agent Fox Mulder and Agent Dana Scully in the stand-alone story. It did not attempt to dwell in alien conspiracy or past characters in the series (other than the noticebly grayer Mr Skinner), so audience that probably have never watched or heard of the X-Files series can treat it just like another science fiction flick. Together with the familiar soundtrack (yes, the 6 simple notes on the keyboard just send chills down your spine) and dark cinematography (this production has greater light exposure than I expected), this movie is worth every single dollar for the ticket.
Initially, I was apprehensive when I saw a heavily photoshop-ed Mulder and Scully on a print ad, but they looked much better in the movie- GA looked a bit thinner but still very beautiful by my standards, while DD looked considerably older with that yucky beard in the first half of the show. This movie picked up from where the series ended ie when FBI closed the X-files office, and both Mulder and Scully were forced to give up their search for the truth. Agent Dana has since returned to medical practice and we see Agent Mulder bumming at home and collating newspaper clipping. While trying to live their unexciting life, they were approach by FBI to assist in a bizarre case of serial kidnapping involving physic forces and a missing Agent. There will be no spoilers in this post, so I won't reveal more about the show. But one thing that remains unchanged to the original X-Files series, Chris Carter continues to make several reference to the Holy Bible in the script.

While Agent Scully was given the advice "Do not give up!" in her quest for a cure for a patient, I thought she should have sought for strength in this familiar verse:-
"Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see."
"Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see."
- Hebrews 11:1
In the Book of Hebrews, faith is defined as something that you believe in even though you can't see it. It's like us believing that there is oxygen to breathe when we don't see it. Having faith in God works in the same way - you can't see Him but you believe that He exists. If any person lacks wisdom, he should seek to ask God, for the Lord says that He will tell us what to do, but only if we have faith that He will answer.
Faith is being certain in what we do not see. Have faith. Amen?
