Yours truly attended the Theatre Idols at the Esplanade earlier this evening because J was starring in the production. Well, other than to give moral support to my best friend, it was also a chance for Shan to catch J's acting.
There were two finalists - Catching Adam Cheng vs Numb. The former was a satirical feel-good drama that explored the pursuit of happiness, in particular, love of a family. It was laced with interesting characters, amongst there were 4 elderly women from a nursing home, a nursing home warden Dua Missy, and George/Simon/Tan Choon Leng/ unnamed Male Orderly/ unnamed Cafe Waiter which were all played by J. Compared to Numb, this was definitely a crowed pleaser as it deals with familiar subjects like women's adoration for their favourite male actors, old foggies with perculiar habits, and children dumping their parents out of selfish reasons. It was thought provoking and was, at some points, pretty touching.
On the other hand, Numb was a dark drama that failed to attract popularity votes at such a contest. I like dark suspense thrillers, but not as twisted and bloody as this. I was enthralled by the idea of secrets being unravelled and people get freed from their sins and stuff. But it soon lost track and became a bit too intense for me. As the judge said, it was an attempt at a "psycho-sexual murder story". A bit too disturbing for Shan too.
J won the Best Actor Award for the night, and I was so proud of him. It really meant a lot as this is his passion. Besides, this production was paying peanuts, and wasn't worth the effort and time. Think 9 hours rehearsals on the day before the performance. *faint*
Anyway, it is worth it. What better birthday pressie can you get yeah?
