Foodie vs Fool

Local TV seems to be flooded with foodshows nowadays from Monday to Sunday. I think after the news, food-centered variety programmes are probably taking the most airtime every night.

It's probably fair to say that the good ol' culinary programmes have evolved over the years. It started off from cooking shows hosted by Aunties for Aunties (cue 方太) to those helmed by more charismatic celebrity cooks (cue Martin Yan).

Nowadays, we see reality cooking competitions (cue Star Chef 至尊厨王), variety shows specifically scripted to introduce eating places (cue Makan King 好吃王). It may just signify a change of viewing habits. However, in my opinion, the TV producers drew the last straw when they kicked out the artistes, and invited a bunch of nobodies to review the featured food joints (cue Buffet Buffet 永远吃不肥).

These (often unqualified) folks will pepper their comments in sub-standard mandarin (QQ is Teochew and not Mandarin!), and behave like pseudo-connessiurs (erm.. how many times have we heard "甜而不腻, 外脆内软"). And it so doesn't help that these foodies look like gluttons. Do they even know how to cook? Sigh

Well, if irresponsible financial advisory services are deemed "mis-selling", these programmes are guilty of... erm.. "mis-tasting"!
