Magik

Does Man Prefer Magic over Miracles? This question keeps popping up as I watch the current drama serial <魔幻视界> / "The Illusionist" on local TV for the past few weeks.

Local production companies trumped the broadcasting station by delivering a superior quality drama serial - a refreshing script with interesting storylines, and none of the usual suspects that cannot act or speak to save their lives. In fact, I likened Thomas Ong to Hugh Grant, as he slid so easily into his role without trying too hard. When I say that, I mean he doesn't resort to breaking a tooth or losing 10 kg for a role. Those antics are for the desperate actors.

For those who watched the show will know the slogan - "人间有奇迹", loosely translated as "There are miracles in the world". Sounds like it was taken from a charity show, don't you think? The substance of the statement was to inspire the audience that all things are possible. However, linking magic to miracles seems a bit incredible. "Magic", after all, is a technical execution of illusion that fools the eye of the audience. While "Miracle" is a marvellous event manifesting a supernatural act of God. We read about miracles that were accounted in the bible, as well as witnessed miracle healing at special church services. But can a magician walk on water, or calm the storm without any bunnies (or doves) in their sleeves. Ok, if I have to cut some slack, what about turning water into wine. Sigh. I should not be too judgemental and try to enjoy the drama.
