Fishers Of Men

I think I must have been a kampung boy in my past life, because rustic open spaces in urbanised cities really interest me - Tekong/ Changi in Singapore, Tai O/ Cheung Chau in Hong Kong, Kenting/ Nantou in Taiwan etc. Hence, I was rather excited when my church friends recently suggested making a trip to Changi Fishery, a kelong off the eastern coast of Singapore.

The ferry ride from Changi ferry terminal was already a mini trip down memory lane. Anyone who did their BMT before the late 90s would remember hopping across rows of bumboats while carrying the heavy field pack when they leave the BMTC camp in the middle of the week (either due to emergency leave or taking an Attend C, medical leave in army terms). But the new ferry terminal at Changi Point has made it easier for passengers to board the boats, though the fear of dropping into the shallow water still lingers.

Our afternoon on the floating fishing farm was a humbling experience as the owner Rosemary shared her difficulties of farming in Singapore, and how she turned her job into a passion. It was an inspiration for many of us to be positive and turn adversity into opportunity, rather than lament on our pretty comfortable life. Her introduction to the different types of farm fish, and interesting anaecdotes of the fellow fish farmers in the vicinity got us all hungry. This leads us naturally to the second highlight of our excursion trip - the seafood dinner!

Bon Apetit!

A feast was whipped up especially by Rosemary's chef-on-board Mario, using the corbia, prawns and mussels freshly harvested from the farm. I would strongly recommend a weekend visit to Changi Fishery! Please visit their website for more information.

"Come, follow me" Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."
