A lot of flake had been generated over the amount of bonuses paid to executives in financial institutions that received substantial aid from the State. Given that taxpayers' money are essentially used for these renumeration purposes, the subject had sparked off a huge amount public furore. So much so that in some cases, political leaders had to intervene by demanding corporations to exercise some discretion and return excessive payouts.
Back in the Little Red Dot, many senior management executives in badly-affected sectors have taken deep cuts in their salary, an assuring indication that they are riding through this difficult period together with any staff that are still keeping their jobs.
Well, that is unless you are working in Singapore's public sector. It is interesting to note that while every known industry is cutting cost or jobs, some of our local ministries and statutory boards are bucking the trend by hiring aggresively, and defending their generous remuneration packages.
The public press recently disclosed two employees from Northwest Community Development Council received 8 months bonus under the "Loyalty Bonus Scheme" (whatever that means!). With all due respect to their responsibilities and performance, it is exceedingly inappropriate for the People's Association to reward any CDC staff such eye-popping bonuses using taxpayers’ money. Most importantly, it is totally unacceptable the public servants are not subject to a decent level of scrutiny and accountablity.
“Mayors do not decide on the salaries, the increments, the bonuses of all our staff at the CDC… If you ask me, I do not know the salaries (and) bonuses of all my staff”. - Mayor Teo Ho Pin of Northwest CDC
Somebody please tell me this ain't true. Else, public servants will soon join the ranks of financial advisors and property agents in JT's personal list of Earth's lowest level of life forms.
