Justin 1, 2, 3

Feng is on a search for his TV alter-egos from American TV-sphere. Not that I am seeking to be like these characters, but it’s interesting to look at the characters (be it real or fiction) who shares the same name:-

The first “Justin” Feng can think of is from Ugly Betty, yes that underaged, skinny latin boy “Justin Suarez”. Honestly, I have never fancied child actors (*Harry Potter included*). The character is a straight-A student who is fashion conscious and exhibits dava-ish behavior, such as commenting on his own body image, being food conscious, watching Fashion TV, and idolizes Martha Stewart and Gene Kelly (*Martha Steward Show and Vogue, anyone?*). This Justin is just REALLY confused. It even got his mum concerned, as she would rather see Justin act more like a "normal" boy. Well, "He's comfortable with who he is.."

The second “Justin” is the feisty "Justin Taylor" from Queer As Folk. Of course, this show is so BANNED in the Lion City, and I managed to watch 3 episodes from Youtube just to figure all the fuss about QAF. Taylor is a young handsome blonde who was ahem.. deflowered on the first episode after he met the lead character Brian outside a gay club (*sounds familiar huh?*). Anyway he fought hard for the love he wanted. It made me believe that you gotta try really hard in what you are pursuing in life. Be it love, career, or a specific goal in mind. I probably need a bit of that in my life right now, in the area of love that is.

Well, people may passed QAF off as just another gay flick, but I had to say it deals with real issues in life. How many times do we hear of parents struggling to come to terms with their son’s homosexuality – in the show, Justin’s father kicked him out of the house and ended up becoming a go-go dancer at Babylon to earn a living. You may not find go-go dancers in Singapore, but we do see guys hawkering their body for some extra cash (*IS Magazine classifieds for services?*).

We also have the most talented people in the local arts scene (*that includes my best budd*), often creating fabulous plays, music and artworks that mirrors their thoughts. We just will not get a comic about gay superhero like in QAF! *hiaks*

My favourite “Justin”, and the one I can relate to - “Justin Walker” of Brothers and Sisters - the youngest member of the super dysfunctional Walker family. As the youngest child, has always felt as though he's been protected by the outside world by his parents and siblings. He went on to join the US Army in Afghanistan after his eldest sister Kitty confided her experiences and fears from the September 11 event. When he returned, he suffered from depression and it led to his drug addiction. It created the largest rift in the Walker family as the mum Nora blames Kitty for encouraging Justin to join the army, leading to their estrangement.

Of course, to set the record straight, I don't do drugs. But yeah, we have all done some silly things that we regret after a good night's sleep (*i should regret it straightaway right*). But honestly, I may have grown a bit cynical over the years, and have became a bit bitter against my elder brother when he returned from his overseas studies at Scotland. Yea, I do love my brother, but I can hardly see him as the kor I know when I was young. I sincerely hope he will be a son that my parents can be proud of.

My friend will say - "Feng, we have all grown older!" Well, then let me look for my SK II shen qi shui. *hiaks*
