And yes, I shall give my unbiased review of the Swimming Instructor aka SI. Although Jem is my best budd, and really the darling of the show, I shall offer my 2 cents worth:-
It's my first time watching SI (even though this the 3rd run), and I did not read too much into the sypnosis. So I went in without much knowledge, and expectation, other than going to appreciate Jem acting in his latest and biggest role on stage.
Oh and yes, I did read the LIFE! review that was written by an intern. The review did not do any justice to the efforts of the theatre company, the cast, and the directors. In short, the review suck big time!
First, I have to say that the stage was shimmy. The small little wading pool in front was really neat. The stage light bounces off nicely, and enhances the scenes where the actors deliver their lines at the edge of the pool.
And of cos, Jem's acting was steady and consistent. Despite being decked in a tiny pair of trunks (yes, Jem has beefed up quite alot for this role), he was able to deliver his lines with plenty of confidence. There were quite a few scenes that raised the temperature in the theatre - the Jem-giving-Isabelle-a-back-rub scene (*I nearly fainted -- "That could be ME!!Gawd, so envy right?! ); and the scandalous Jem's buttcrack-on-display shower scene (He's saved by a frosted screen. But it was a big sacrifice, for Gav mentioned he could see Jem's 8 month 15!).
Guan, the main lead, wasn't that bad as an Ah Beng swimming instructor. Considered that it was his first stage attempt, he did manage to surprise me with some decent acting chops. But then, I believed his good looks (read: hot bod and sharp jawline) probably attracted more interest from the (male) crowd.
Isabelle is the other surprise. I swear I was so SWOONED by her looks. Can't believe she's Chinese (as Jem said, her gran. Well, God has been kind with her cos she looked fabulous in those bikinis. Too bad, not many people in the audience will probably give her a second look. She's just not their type (*sic*).
Well, I do hear positive comments from friends who have caught the show. As a friend put it "Your buddy Jeremy SAVED the show!". It is evident that Jeremy has earned himself a slew of fans (haha, mostly boys of course), for his excellent acting.
Jeremy Lee Fan Club - anyone?
